Female Engineer of the Month
Head of Manufacturing Engineering – Core Engineering Team
I joined the GKN Graduate Training Programme after completing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. At the time I only had 2 things in my head: my awareness of how little I knew about practical engineering and my ambition to travel. GKN gave me the broad experience I was looking for as I have worked in manufacturing and investment planning, quality, logistics and new product introduction on products as diverse as cars, aeroplanes, helicopters and tractors. My wanderlust was fulfilled at the same time as I performed these jobs in Germany, USA, France and Japan.
After returning to the UK, I was seconded to the Aerospace Growth Partnership, project managing the activities to implement a government/UK industry strategy for the next 30 years. This taught me invaluable lessons about the politics of manufacturing, how to engage people in ideas and the importance of communication.
My current role is launching a platform to give a common approach, structure and standard of quality to GKN Aerospace’s manufacturing engineers across the globe.
I recommend engineering as a career path for anyone with a logical approach to life. There are far more opportunities than deeply technical analysis, the skills are easily transferred across industries, and engineers are recognised around the world. There is nothing more exciting for me than being able to touch my work, and see it take off from the runway or drive down the road.
